Guadalajara is the capital of Jalisco state and the second largest city in Mexico with a population around 1,800,000. The metropolitan area, which includes the cities of Zapopan. Tlaquepaque and Tonalá, has a population around 3,500,000. Guadalajara was founded in 1542 and is located about 400 miles west of Mexico City at an altitude of 5220 feet. Guadalajara is known as "The City of Roses".
